John Wesley Hardin : Suppressed Memories
Published in Paperback by Osiris Publishing Company (26 May, 1999)
Author: Steppen Wirth
Average review score:

Unique and compelling
My father was born in Fannin County, Texas in 1910, the birthplace of John Wesley Hardin. I grew up listening to stories of Hardin's exploits and was pleasantly surprised to run across Steppen Wirth's book, John Wesley Hardin: Suppressed Memories. Many of my father's stories of Hardin came to life and old memories resurfaced.

The various biographies about Wes Hardin are little more than a retelling of his autobiography. Some authors go on to vilify, and some glorify Hardin but none really gives any insight into Hardin's personality. There isn't any reason for anyone to write
another biography on Wes Hardin unless new information is uncovered and that is doubtful. That's why a book like Steppen Wirth's is refreshing. He is not limited to rehashing Hardin's autobiography. Like one Reviewer put it: "The line between what is real and what the author has crafted from imagination is difficult to see." In Steppen's book Hardin steps from the pages, you can feel him breathe. You can almost touch him. The softer side of Wes Hardin, his deep love for his wife and close bond with family and friends moved me. Just when I started to feel empathy for Hardin the author reminded me of Hardin's willingness to kill. I admit there are parts of this book I think are too graphic for my taste. I wonder about the necessity of such violent detail. I have never understood why men have to kill each other but I've never understood war either. Most women don't. I realize Hardin's world was a different world, a world where you had to stay alive during that horrible period after the Civil War. I know anti-Union sentiments were still strong in my father's youth.

This title is a welcome addition to the Hardin list of books. Steppen's prose is vivid and strong. I became so engrossed I read the whole thing in one sitting. I will read this book again and look forward to more books by Steppen Wirth.

An insight into the complex personality of Wes Hardin
This book tells the story of the meteoric rise of master gunfighter John Wesley Hardin, a legend by the age of eighteen, who dazzled outlaws and lawmen alike with his extreme daring and phenomenal skill with firearms. The author, Steppen Wirth manages cleverly to interweave crystalline paragraphs, reminiscences, letters, journals, and newspaper accounts to recreate this intensely human story. Eminently fascinating...a colorful, and inventive book, but not one for the queasy.

As a Hardin fan I read this book with great curiosity. In fact I read it four times and each time I found something else to like about it. Steppen Wirth effectively conveys the many sides of John Wesley Hardin's complex personality. It is truly a work of art. I highly recommend it.

Si Dunn. Dallas Morning News, Dallas Texas
In his own time, gunfighter John Wesley Hardin was one of the most feared men in Texas and the Southwest. Author Steppen Wirth has created an unusual yet enteraining book about Hardin by combining fiction with facts, eyewitness accounts, and old photographs from the 1870s, 1880s, and 1890s. The line between what is real and what the author has crafted from imagination is difficult to see. And that is a key factor in the charm of this work, now in its second printing. Mr. Wirth, a Texas native, lives and writes in Montana.

Just good ol' inspiration...
Reading this book gives anyone with everyday personal conflicts inspiration to keep going. Anyone can move mountains and this book proves it. I can't wait for the next one!

Wonderfully Inspirational Short Stories
The book was easy to read because it's a collection of short stories.

I wasn't prepared though for how funny and inspirational those stories would be. At times I laughed until I cried. I've read several of the stories over and over again just because they're so good. The author definitely has a way with words - and definitely writes about situations that we can all relate to.

The reader will be inspired over and over again.

You're Not The Only One
This is a fun read. The stories in this book are sometimes quirky, often funny and always inspiring. I enjoy the author's style of storytelling--it's almost like you're reading her diary. She doesn't just tell the story, she tells on herself in how she was interpreting each situation, until God showed her the bigger picture. It's a refreshingly honest look at one person's walk with God, quirks and all. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one.

Even Fish Slappers Need a Second Chance

It's All About Grace.
Many adults struggle with the acceptance of God's grace and most of those don't even understand it. So, (even though kids probably understand grace better than adults) how does one explain grace to young children? Well, this story based off a part of JONAH does a decent job. It tells about the mean and rotten Ninevites and how God sent Jonah to them to tell them to stop their wicked ways, especially fish slapping. I read this book to the preschool children I teach and they loved it. The illustrations are hilarious and the rhyming of the verses is reminiscent of Dr. Suess. It's a great book illustrating God's grace in a simple way.

Teaching Values
I purchased this book for my parochial school 2nd grade class. I try to extend my reading teaching and tap into the personal choices of my students. Students absolutely love Veggie Tales books and movies. I purchased this book after seeing Jonah at the theater and all the current buzz over the movie.

Wonderful! My 3 year old gets it!
This is a wonderful book in the Veggietales tradition! The rhyme makes it fun and the story is told in such a way the virtues and character lessons, as well as the character of God, shine through! It will remain a favorite for a long time.

Gunfighter: An Autobiography
Published in Paperback by Creation Books (01 April, 2001)
Authors: John Wesley Hardin and Mark Manning
Average review score:

The real thing
I like elegant language, and I don't like violence. JWH's autobiography has none of the former and plenty of the latter, yet it is exactly right for what it is, the autobiography of a notorious gunfighter who thought the easiest way to solve any problem was to kill the problem. You only had to look cross-eyed at Hardin, and you were a dead man. Yet, as John Wesley tells his story, every one of his forty-odd killings was justified. The reader almost feels sympathetic...

The Real Deal
....

That aside, this is a wonderful book. it is not well written, but Hardin never claimed to be a writer. This is the only known autobigraphy by an actual American West gunslinger, and Hardin, according to both himself and history, was one of the greatest.

There seems to be a fair amount of exaggeration and plain old tale telling, but I think you'd find that in any autobiography. This is both an insightful view into a time long gone and an entertaining read. If you've ever watched a western, read one, or just plain pretended you were an outlaw when you were a kid, then you owe it to yourselfd to have a copy of Hardin's book on your shelves.

Highly recommended reading for western buffs
Gunfighter is the autobiography of famed western gunfighter John Wesley Hardin. It was 1868 when John killed his first man at the age of fifteen and became a wanted outlaw. He took up a life of cattle drover, gambler, and killer whose bloody trespass through Southern states after the end of the Civil War brought him into contact with Wild Bill Hickok, the Texas Rangers, an emerging Ku Klux Klan, lynch mobs, bounty hunters, and assassins. His journal/autobiography ends abruptly in 1889 and was first published in 1896, a year after his assassination and remains the only extent and authentic autobiography of a western gunfighter. Out of print for the last four decades, this new edition of a western classic is enhanced with an informative introduction by Mark Manning and highly recommended reading for western buffs and students of American frontier history.

Chronic Pain Control Workbook
Published in Hardcover by Fine Communications (July, 1997)
Authors: Kimeron N. Hardin, Ellen M. Catalano, and Ellen Mohr Cataleno
Average review score:

excellent starting point
Unfortunately, I learned almost all the stuff in this book the hard way: through countless doctors, practioners, classes, friends, internet postings and searches, medical journals and books, library visits, etc. The information is pretty current and will give you a very good, balanced view of treating chronic pain, this most mysterious and frustrating of all modern ailments. It provides a wide variety of topics, including how to cope with the emotional stress that accompanies the pain. In an ocean of methods, information, and misinformation, this book is a convenient little tug boat to guide you through the harbor.

My heart goes out to anyone having to deal with chronic pain and it's insidious misdiagnsosis and mistreatment by the leading medical establishment. This book should help you battle against the big dogs and fight your way through the influx of information, and hopefully find you some relief.

Exellent book
I finded this book an exellent source of the strenth and hope which helping me a lot to fight with my old enemy-chronic pain. I am rewreading some of the chapters of this book, when I feel down and exoughsted with pain. There's not just dry instructions but a friendly and competent advise. I feel much better as physically as phsychologically after reading this book. If you are one of those who is suffering with pain, this book is what you need. I highly recommend it to bue it and it will help you to win pain or at least be in control of it.

Getting Ready for Marriage Workbook : How to Really Get to Know the Person You're Going to Marry
Published in Paperback by Thomas Nelson (January, 1992)
Authors: Jerry D. Hardin and Dianne C. Sloan
Average review score:

A Must Read & Do for all engaged couples!
If you are thinking about getting married, do this workbook with your fiance. We both loved it and worked at it until we were done with it. It helps you to bring up subjects that you might not otherwise think to bring up, allows you to communicate about touchy subjects and work past them. If someone won't do this workbook with you, I don't think you should marry them. Just my opinion. This was the most valuable tool for us especially since we had a very short engagement.

I'll tell you why this is a great book.
Yes, this is a good book, why ? Simply because you and your fiancee LEARN A LOT ! In my case, we decided to break up for a while to think again about our true "love". Emotional love exists, but friendship love is not consolidated and of course Commitment love is far away. However, we did not realized this before and in fact we were preparing to get married ! We even attended one special 2 day session with other couples to discuss the most important aspects of marriage, however we kept thinking on getting married until we did all the questionaries and discuss the differences. Wow ! I never imagined there's still so much to learn from our relationship and so much differences. Believe me. If you are one of those persons who really care and think about a relationship beyond the typical "being in love" stuff, then you should get this book and ensure a good decision. Trust me, the price is worth ! Thanks Jerry & Dianne

Smooths Out The Rough Spots Before Marriage
My husband and I read many books together before our marriage last year. This book helped us the most. We were able to discuss potential differences and expectations. This book helped us understand each other, our families, and our ideas about marriage better. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve their relationship and prepare for the more difficult parts of marriage.
